It sounds like Kite Fighting plays a large role in the lives of the people of Afghanistan. It is like a hobby that most everyone has in common. For some people it is even a business, on top of a hobby. It had political impact on the country, because for some unknown reason, kite fighting was banned during the Taliban rule. So it must have been affecting the way the Taliban wanted things to go, and so it affected the way the people lived their lives.
I think that Khaled Hosseini used kite running in The Kite Runner to help bring the story together, kind of tie up all the loose ends. Also, it is a big part of the lives of the people of Afghanistan, so you can't really leave it out.
