Walk the Line
I think it brings several things to the story, such as emotion, color, and just overall interest. It catches and keeps the reader's attention. It makes them think about what is going on in the story. It allows them to make connections to things they have seen, heard, or even experienced themselves. Usually they are necessary for these very things, no one will want to read or finish a boring and uninteresting book.
